I bet there are many people heard of the art of war by Sun Zi. Not too little not too late, I had gone though a less intricate book, thanks to tsai chih chung the taiwanese cartoonist who had illustrated it into a fun reading comic book. I've got this through Kah Yan, one of my friend just right after her spring cleaning for cny.

As i read through the book, I thought it will be very technical and rigid but it had proven me wrong. It is versatil when and most of the time is the perfect timing. When i got to know how he had ordered the emperor's concubines to beheaded because they are not serious of taking the command by him, I feel sense of cruelty. I feel he made a deviant order. Outrageous as it seems, then again, He had given them chance to do it again. Because most of his strategy is to look at oneself before checking out others. So he did said maybe he did not give a clear instruction. But for the 2nd time he give punishments as he should be. I feel there is a reasons for him to do that.

1. to antagonise and make the troops felt inferior, so they can take this matter seriously
2. it is better to sacrifice 2 people than the whole troops
3. to put the emperor in his place so that he will not interfere with any sorts of military move even how omnipotent he is.

There are 13 chapters of how to prepare and execute in a war. Of course it has to create a balance between all facets. I still feel the art of war depends on the situation you're facing not just disgorge everything out from the book. It does include deception and exploitation in many ways to attack the enemy such as boycotting the man, cut of their supplies and make them yours, provoking them depending how the commander is. Yet he has a sensible heart when he won't attack the enemy from thier disadvantage point. He also advise to use our cons to intimidate them. It is better to subdue a whole country without any war using a diplomatic way. For me sun wu is just a brilliant, focussed man. His mind is a clear as a still water unpolluted with anything so that he can make such calculated decisions.

I feel the most succesful person is that he or she able to create a well-balance life and excel in all areas while has a crystal clear mind.

and i love how the seige from every aspect......yet it is so humble to look at oneself and improve the defence rather than being afraid of what might come to you
